OUR STORY

FROM VISION
TO LEGACY

What began in Lynchburg, Virginia as a singular vision for martial arts education has grown into a nationally recognized organization with a legacy of excellence, honor, and Kaizen.

The Beginning – 1975

American Freestyle Karate was founded with a vision to create a system that blended effective martial arts training with personal development and leadership. From humble beginnings in a storefront school in Lynchburg, Virginia, the organization set out with an unshakable commitment to helping students reach their highest potential.

Growth and Expansion – 1980s–1990s

As the organization expanded, AFKA schools began developing students, instructors, competitors, and future leaders across multiple regions. The first Hall of Fame events established a tradition of honoring those who exemplified the martial arts spirit.

A National Organization – 2000s

The growth of AFKA’s instructor network and affiliation program established the association as a recognized national organization. Black belt programs, instructor certifications, and leadership development workshops brought the Kaizen philosophy to thousands of students.

The Hall of Fame Legacy

For decades, the AFKA Hall of Fame has stood as the pinnacle of recognition—honoring those who have dedicated their lives to instruction, mentorship, competition, and preservation of American Freestyle Karate.

50th Anniversary – 2026

Today, AFKA continues to preserve tradition while evolving for the future. The 50th Anniversary Hall of Fame represents both a celebration of the past and a declaration of purpose for the next 50 years.

Where AFKA Is Going Next
